How to choose Google Business Profile categories

Your primary category carries more ranking weight than anything else on your Google Business Profile. How to pick it, and how many secondaries to add.

Your primary Google Business Profile category does more for your map pack ranking than any other single field. Get it right and you compete for the searches you want. Get it wrong and you are invisible for them, whatever else you do.

Primary beats everything else

Google lets you set one primary category and up to nine secondary ones. They are not equal. The primary category is the strongest relevance signal on the profile. Secondary categories add reach at the margins and can, in a few cases, dilute the main one.

So the question is not "which categories describe my business" but "which single category do the businesses winning my target search use".

How to find the right one

  1. Search your main term from the location you want to rank in, using a tool that shows results from that place rather than from your own browser.
  2. Look at the three businesses in the map pack.
  3. Read their primary category. Several free and paid tools expose this from the profile data.
  4. If all three share a category and you have a different one, change yours.

That is it. This takes fifteen minutes and it is more useful than a week of keyword research for local search.

How many secondary categories

Add the ones that genuinely describe a service you sell and would happily take a call about. Stop there. Three to five is normal for a focused business.

Two things go wrong when people add all ten:

  • You start appearing for searches you cannot serve well, which brings bad calls and eventually bad reviews.
  • Google's own guidance is to use the fewest categories that describe your core business, and profiles stuffed with loosely related categories get less relevance for the ones that matter.

The category is not the same as your services list

This confuses people. Categories are a fixed list Google maintains. Your services are free text you write yourself, and they matter separately.

Fill the services section out properly with the names customers actually use, and write a real description for each one. It is one of the most underused fields on the profile and it costs an hour.

When to change it

Changing your primary category can move rankings within days, in either direction. Two rules:

  • Change one thing at a time, then wait two weeks. If you change the category, the description and the services on the same afternoon, you will never know which one did what.
  • Record where you rank before you change anything. A grid check gives you a baseline you can compare against.

What it will not fix

A category change will not overcome distance. If you are six miles from where people search, the right category improves relevance but the map still weighs proximity heavily.

It also will not overcome a review gap. If the businesses above you have ninety reviews and you have four, the category was never the whole problem.
